Why 5 Element Acupuncture
5 Element Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China about 5,000 yrs. Ago. It is a complex system of examination, diagnosis and treatment. In its inception it was thought of as preventive medicine, that is, the creation and prevention of health. We in the West have heard about acupuncture in its anesthetic use. Another form of acupuncture that we often hear about is known as symptomatic acupuncture. It can bring temporary relief from pain without diagnosing the cause. This is known as the 'barefoot doctor or formula approach'. 5 Element Acupuncture is a different style which sees the entire human being in bodymindspirit. 5 Element Acupuncture recognizes the process of health and illness and how to go about the restoration of lost health in an individual. The 5 Elements are phases of energy seen in all of nature. They are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Since we are a part of nature, these elements show up in us too.
The basic theory of Oriental medicine is the belief that there is a Life Force call Ch'i (chee) energy. When this Life Force flows within us in a harmonious, balanced way there is health. When it is not flowing properly, then there is disharmony and imbalance. This is illness.
The usual way that we know we are sick is via a symptom which acts as a signal of distress. We may feel the distress as a migraine headache, an ulcer, a period of depression, arthritis or any other complaint. These symptoms point to trouble somewhere in the flow of the Ch'i Energy. We could say that the symptom is the trouble in itself and so try to eliminate it, but from the perspective of 5 Element Acupuncture, this would be like covering up an oil light on your car's dashboard when it is indicating a problem. In other words, the problem is not dispelled by disguising the symptom. 5 Element Acupuncture treatment restores order and balance to the Ch'i Energy, enabling it to flow clearly without obstruction so that the person can heal. In this way, 5 Element Acupuncture treats the person, not the disease.
A full examination is done using diagnostic tools to assess the condition of the Ch'i Energy at many levels. Since 5 Element Acupuncture recognizes that all aspects of a person's life affects his or her health, these tools require observing energy as it manifests at many levels. An important diagnostic tool is pulse reading. Each organ/system function is associated with a specific pulse position on either wrist. Pulses are read to ensure that the Ch'i of one organ or system is flowing freely into another and not 'blocked', to determine if one system is taking more Ch'i then another so the energy needs to be transferred to a 'weaker' function and to indicate other conditions which are felt as unique qualities on a pulse. So, two people may have the same symptoms, yet within 5 Element Acupuncture, the diagnosis and treatment vary extensively.
